On August 16, 2025, the Southeast University International Young Scholars Forum — School of Statistics and Data Science Subforum was successfully held in Conference Room 1801 of the New Liberal Arts Building at Jiulonghu Campus. The event brought together outstanding young scholars from China and abroad to discuss frontier developments in statistics and data science.
At the opening of the forum, Prof. Zhan introduced the participants to Southeast University’s long history and strong academic tradition. He reviewed the century-long development of statistics at the University and outlined the School’s educational philosophy: promoting interdisciplinary integration through data-driven research and advancing the closed-loop development of theory and practice through problem-oriented innovation.

Prof. Zhan then gave an overview of the School of Statistics and Data Science. He noted that Southeast University’s statistics discipline has a solid foundation and that the School was officially established in December 2024 after years of development. Since its founding, the School has built an academic framework comprising three academic departments and one Big Data Center, covering mathematical statistics, applied statistics, data science, and related areas.
He also highlighted the School’s commitment to academic excellence and its research strengths in big data analytics, machine learning, financial statistics, and biostatistics. Looking ahead to the 15th Five-Year Plan period, he noted that the School will further strengthen talent cultivation by fostering innovation and practical ability through diversified training models and deeper integration of industry, education, and research. The School is committed to nurturing future talent in statistics and data science with a global vision and strong innovative capacity.
The forum then featured presentations by four outstanding international young scholars. Drawing on their respective expertise, they shared recent progress and emerging directions in statistics and data science. Topics included high-dimensional data analysis, the theory and applications of deep learning and reinforcement learning, and big data analytics in environmental and materials-related fields. The speakers also discussed the academic value and practical relevance of their work, and expressed strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly in areas such as biomedicine, economics and finance, and the social sciences.
Following the presentations, the participants engaged in in-depth discussions on statistical theory, data science applications, and the integration of artificial intelligence with statistics. The successful subforum provided a valuable platform for academic exchange among young scholars from around the world and further enhanced the international profile of the School of Statistics and Data Science at Southeast University. Moving forward, the School will continue to advance its internationalization efforts, improve its talent recruitment mechanisms, and contribute to the development of statistics and data science and to major national priorities.
